In this lesson we will be reading from excerpts from a primary source. Hammurabi’s Code is one of the first written law documents that historians have acquired. We will be looking for elements from this text to predict the type of society that these people lived. We will be exploring its separation of classes, judicial system, and Babylonian values. We will also begin to discuss how this was one of the first stepping stones leading us to our written law, and why written law is beneficial to a society.
Students are to read the information and answer the questions found in Phase 1-3. In class, students answer Phase 1 individually, Phase 2 in small groups, and Phase 3 as a large group.
